| One of those "deep" thinking albums from Sly! However, just not mainstream enough. I really liked this album and really enjoyed his attempts at James Brown; maybe a tribute? A very good album. |

| It is a tragedy that this album gets dismissed by both casual fans and critics of Sly's music. There are great moments throughout (i.e. Say You Will, Better Thee Than Me), but for me, the standout track is Wishful Thinkin'. This beautiful, sometimes seemingly improvised performance features some of Sly's best singing. I particularly like the violin playing on several tracks. In his lyric, Sly seems to be settling down, searching through peace in marriage and family. After two classic albums documenting Syl's frustration with the slow pace of social change, Small Talk does not sound trite in comparison. It holds up as a very successful follow-up to Fresh - I think it might even be better... |
