Lyrics:

Stand!
In the end you'll still be you
One that's done all the things you set out to do
Stand!
There's a cross for you to bear
Things to go through if you're going anywhere

Stand!
For the things you know are right
It s the truth that the truth makes them so uptight
Stand!
All the things you want are real
You have you to complete and there is no deal

Stand. stand, stand!
(Everybody, yeah)
Stand. stand, stand!

Stand!
You've been sitting much too long
There's a permanent crease in your right and wrong
Stand!
There's a midget standing tall
And a giant beside him about to fall

Stand. stand, stand!
Stand. stand, stand!

Stand!
They will try to make you crawl
And they know what you're saying makes sense and all
Stand!
Don't you know that you are free
Well, at least in your mind if you want to be

Everybody
Stand, stand, stand!

Stand! Na na-na na-na na na na na-na... (continue to fade)

My favorite song ever. I was surprised read online that it was considered a Black Anthem although I can see why it could be. I am Black myself, dark complexioned and was going thru a very bad time as a teenager when it wasn't popular to be as dark or as skinny as I was among my own peers and family. I was starting to withdraw and become extroverted, afraid to speak up for myself, but listening to this song just moved me so much and influenced me greatly. I developed my own style and my confidence soared! I really internalized this song and have to thank Sly and the family for helping me during that transformative summer.

This was such an important song to me when I was growing up. I honestly believe it helped me become the strong person I grew to be. The thing is, I hadn't heard it in so many years, until yesterday when I caught the end on the radio. I had to get a copy of the lyrics so I could remember how it made me feel. I was so happy to find this site. The song might be just what I needed to snap me out of this minor depression I feel as I approach "50".
